How to Care for Your
Women's Suit

A bespoke suit is a long-term investment. With the right care, your Solovedress suit will retain its shape, colour, and elegance for years — even decades — to come.

How to Wash Your Women's Suit

The golden rule of suit care: less washing is more. Premium wool, linen, and tailored fabrics are naturally resilient and do not need frequent washing. Over-washing is one of the most common causes of premature wear, colour fading, and loss of structure.

Hand washing suitHand washing — the gentlest method for delicate suit fabrics.
Spot cleaning suitSpot cleaning addresses minor marks without stressing the full garment.

Spot Cleaning (Recommended for Minor Marks)

For small stains or marks, spot cleaning is always the first choice. Use a clean white cloth dampened with cold water and a drop of gentle fabric detergent. Dab — never rub — the affected area, working from the outside of the stain inward. Allow to air dry naturally away from direct heat.

Hand Washing (For Linen & Light Fabrics)

  • 1
Fill a clean basin with cool water (max 30°C / 86°F) and add a small amount of gentle wool-safe detergent.
  • 2
Submerge the garment and gently agitate the water with your hands. Do not wring, twist, or scrub.
  • 3
Rinse thoroughly with cool clean water until all detergent is removed.
  • 4
Press the water out gently by rolling the garment in a clean dry towel. Never wring.
  • 5
Reshape the garment and lay flat on a clean dry towel to air dry. Never hang a wet suit — it will stretch out of shape.
Care labelAlways check your care label first — it is the definitive guide for your specific fabric.
⚠ Can I Machine Wash My Suit?
In most cases, no. Machine washing — even on a delicate cycle — subjects suit fabrics to agitation and heat that can permanently distort the structure, shrink the fabric, and damage the interfacing. We strongly recommend against machine washing any structured suit jacket or tailored trousers.

Dry Cleaning (Best for Wool & Structured Jackets)

For structured wool suits, dry cleaning remains the gold standard. We recommend professional dry cleaning no more than once or twice per season. Always use a reputable dry cleaner who specialises in fine garments.

How to Iron & Steam Your Suit

Wrinkles are inevitable — but they are also easily resolved with the right technique. The key is to use gentle heat and always protect the fabric surface.

Ironing a women's suit jacket
Ironing with a pressing cloth protects the fabric surface from shine and heat damage.
Steaming a women's suit
A garment steamer is the safest and most effective tool for daily suit maintenance.

Steaming (Preferred Method)

A handheld garment steamer is the safest and most effective way to remove wrinkles from a suit. Hold the steamer 2–3 cm from the fabric surface and move it slowly downward. Allow the garment to cool and set before wearing or storing.

Ironing (When Steaming Is Not Sufficient)

  • 1
Set your iron to the appropriate temperature — wool: medium-low; linen: medium; silk blends: low.
  • 2
Always use a pressing cloth between the iron and the suit fabric. Direct contact can cause irreversible shine marks on wool.
  • 3
Press — do not drag. Lift and place the iron rather than sliding it across the fabric.
  • 4
Iron the trousers along the natural crease line for a sharp, tailored finish.
  • 5
Hang the garment immediately and allow it to cool completely before wearing or storing.

✓  Do

  • Use a pressing cloth at all times
  • Steam from the inside of the garment when possible
  • Allow the suit to cool before wearing
  • Iron trousers along the crease line
  • Use distilled water in your steamer

✗  Don't

  • Iron directly on wool or silk without a cloth
  • Use high heat on any suit fabric
  • Iron over buttons or embellishments
  • Wear the suit immediately after ironing
  • Iron a damp suit — steam it instead

How to Store Your Suit Properly

How you store your suit between wears is just as important as how you clean it. Improper storage is the leading cause of permanent creasing, shoulder distortion, and fabric deterioration.

A well-organised wardrobe with proper spacing is the foundation of long-term suit care.

A breathable garment bag protects against dust while allowing the fabric to breathe.
Wide wooden suit hanger
A wide, contoured wooden hanger is essential for maintaining the jacket's shoulder shape.

The Right Hanger

Always hang your suit jacket on a wide, contoured wooden or padded hanger that matches the width of the shoulders. Thin wire hangers will distort the shoulder seams over time.

Garment Bags

Store your suit in a breathable fabric garment bag — not plastic. Plastic traps moisture and can cause mildew and fabric yellowing over time.

Wardrobe Spacing

Give your suits room to breathe. Overcrowding a wardrobe causes permanent creasing. Ideally, leave at least 2–3 cm of space between each hanging garment.

Pro Tip: Place cedar wood blocks or lavender sachets in your wardrobe near your suits. Cedar naturally repels moths and absorbs excess moisture. Replace cedar blocks every 6 months to maintain their effectiveness.

How to Prevent Your Suit from Losing Its Shape

Shape retention is the hallmark of a quality bespoke suit — and with the right habits, your suit will hold its structure beautifully for years.

Brushing a women's suit jacket
A regular brush-down after each wear removes surface dust and keeps the fabric nap aligned.

After Every Wear

  • 1
Brush the suit with a soft natural-bristle clothes brush, moving in the direction of the fabric grain.
  • 2
Hang immediately on a proper wooden hanger. Never leave a suit folded over a chair or crumpled in a bag.
  • 3
Allow the suit to rest for at least 24 hours between wears. Wool fibres need time to recover and release moisture.
  • 4
Empty all pockets before hanging. Heavy items in pockets pull the jacket out of shape over time.

✓  Shape Protectors

  • Use wide wooden hangers always
  • Rest the suit 24h between wears
  • Brush after every wear
  • Steam to relax wrinkles gently
  • Store in a breathable garment bag

✗  Shape Destroyers

  • Hanging on wire or thin hangers
  • Leaving in a crumpled heap
  • Overstuffing pockets while wearing
  • Storing in plastic garment bags
  • Wearing the same suit daily without rest
Seasonal Storage Tip: Before storing your suit for an extended period, have it professionally cleaned first. Storing a suit with invisible stains or body oils can cause permanent discolouration and attract moths. Clean, then store — always in that order.
